“This question, only you can answer,” Lakhesis reminds Klotho.

“I know, Lakhesis,” Klotho admits, her footsteps pausing as she lingers on the rocky shoreline. “I’m not ready. They’re not ready.”

Lakhesis cradles the urn, tucked like an infant in her arm. The ship, a distant silhouette, cuts across the green-tinted tide.

Atropos taps the counter beside the empty wrapper, grinding her finger against the crease to draw out a few shimmering granules.

“A sip, and everything slows down.” She pinches the grains. Drops them into the spoon. “How many grains of sand,” she murmurs, “do you think make a pile?”
